What This Study Is About

The University of Central Florida (UCF), in partnership with the One Idea Foundation, is conducting a research study to evaluate the Learn to Start (LTS) program—an innovative anchor program and technology designed to help high school students explore who they are, develop real-world skills, and prepare for meaningful careers.

The study’s goal is to understand how LTS impacts students’ confidence, motivation, and ability to plan for the future. It also explores how education can do more than simply prepare students for tests—by empowering them with purpose, identity, and agency.

Why This Research Matters

In today’s fast-changing world, schools need better tools to help students become adaptable, thoughtful, and market-ready. Traditional grades and test scores don’t tell the whole story.

This study is part of a growing national conversation about transforming education to meet modern challenges. By focusing on human development outcomes like self-knowledge, storytelling, decision-making, and relationship-building, Learn to Start aims to redefine what success looks like after graduation.

Research like this helps educators, policymakers, and communities:

  • Improve school programs by identifying what works
  • Support students with strategies that foster personal growth and career readiness
  • Shape education policy using evidence-based practices

How the Study Works

The study involves approximately 150 students across two schools. It includes:

  • Two brief student surveys (fall and spring)
  • A review of student-created work (no names attached)
  • Optional focus group discussions for deeper insight

All student data will be anonymous and protected. Participation is voluntary and approved by UCF’s Institutional Review Board (IRB Study #8290).
